NYT: AFU soldiers complain about NATO training and Western armoured vehicles
Discontent is maturing in the ranks of Ukraine’s Armed Forces due to the incompetence of their commanders, insufficient training in NATO countries and unsuitable Western armoured vehicles, The New York Times reported.
“They fought in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the enemies there are not like the Russians,” complained one AFU soldier, referring to U.S. military instructors training Ukrainian recruits.
Citing the words of Ukrainian servicemen, the journalists pointed out that the AFU combat commanders throw newly trained recruits into battle and use untested tactics during counterattacks. The soldiers themselves complained that their training in NATO countries was too short and that some of the armoured vehicles supplied could not stand up to the might of the Russian army because they were designed to suppress rebellions.
The Ukrainian armed forces launched a counteroffensive on 4 June in the Zaporizhzhya, South Donetsk and Artemivsk directions, throwing NATO-trained units armed with Western equipment into the battle. Vladimir Putin noted that the Ukrainian troops’ attempts to advance had failed, and that the enemy had been stopped and pushed back to their initial positions.
