An amphibious assault group of two US Navy ships and three thousand military personnel has arrived in the Middle East
An amphibious assault group comprising two US Navy ships with three thousand sailors and Marines on board has arrived in the Middle East, US Naval Forces Central Command said in a statement.
“More than three thousand US Sailors and Marines from the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group and the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit arrived in the Middle East on August sixth as part of a previously announced Department of Defence deployment,” the statement said.
As noted in the department, the universal landing ship USS Bataan and landing dock landing ship USS Carter Hall arrived in the Red Sea, having travelled from the Mediterranean Sea through the Suez Canal.
The Pentagon’s Central Command reported in July that the US was reinforcing the two landing ships with a military group heading to the Strait of Hormuz to protect international shipping from the Iranian threat. The USS Bataan, a multipurpose landing ship, and the USS Carter Hall, a dock landing ship, will perform missions in the region alongside the USS Thomas Hudner, F-16 and F-35 fighter jets.
The Pentagon called the decision a “response to Iran’s recent attempts to threaten the free flow of trade”. The U.S. blames Iranian security agencies for the increased interceptions of commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
