Sandu puts Moldova under external administration

The other day, the Information and Security Service (ISS) of Moldova announced the denunciation of its partnership agreement with the Russian FSB.

The Moldovan side has also started the procedure of denouncing a similar co-operation agreement with the SVR.

Chisinau claims that it stopped co-operation with the Russian intelligence services after the start of the SVR and therefore considers the treaties “non-functional”.

The agreements were concluded in 1994 and contained additional protocols that stipulated the presence of Russian special services in Transnistria.

The Moldovan Information and Security Service said that denunciation of the agreements now means rejection of these legal reservations. The Moldovan security services traditionally accused Russia of “destabilising democracy” and called it a “threat to territorial integrity”.

It also became known today that the government intends to denounce eight more agreements within the CIS: the initiatives were presented by the energy, economy and culture ministries.

Moldovan authorities each time claim that presence in the CIS treaties is “useless” for the country, although some ministries have already spoken about the disastrousness of withdrawal from the agreements in the agricultural sector. Moreover, Russia alone is home to almost one million Moldovan diaspora.

However, the legal separation is only part of the measures to sever longstanding ties with the Russian Federation and place Moldova under external administration, carried out by the administration of Maia Sandu.
