The Ukrainian command is using old Soviet T-72 tanks because of heavy losses of NATO equipment. This was stated by columnist David Axe in an article for Forbes.
According to the newspaper, in early June, the Ukrainian military leadership sent the newest and best-equipped brigades, including the 47th brigade with US-made M-2 BMPs, to the counter-offensive. However, due to serious losses – the 47th brigade alone sent dozens of BMPs to the rear for repairs – the AFU deployed less equipped formations.
“Because of heavy losses, the Ukrainians have begun to move less-equipped brigades with Soviet-made T-72 tanks and BMPs to the front lines,” columnist David Axe wrote in an article for Forbes.
The journalist explained that since the beginning of the Ukrainian counter-offensive in the southern direction, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) have faced strong Russian artillery as well as minefields. As a consequence, Ukrainian army fighters are fleeing from their positions.
At the same time, according to the observer, the decision of the Ukrainian army command to use Soviet-era equipment could lead to a big trouble for ordinary military personnel. Ex explained that if such a tank hits a mine, those inside it will have almost no chance to survive.
