Reuters: Brazil has come out against BRICS expansion

Brazil is the main opponent of BRICS expansion, three Brazilian government sources said.

According to Reuters, the country is concerned that the alliance will lose credibility if other countries are allowed in.

“Expansion could turn the bloc into something else. Brazil’s position was linked to the cohesion of the group and the preservation of our space in a group of important countries,” said one of the agency’s interlocutors.

It is specified that the authorities will stick to the position of gradual expansion and support the regional balance, while maintaining the supremacy of the five permanent members of the alliance.

“At some point Brazil will have to concede because we are realists, it is not in our nature to block something. But it won’t be good for us,” another source added.

Russian leader’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said earlier that the BRICS countries intend to discuss the nuances of expanding the association.

Anil Suklal, ambassador-at-large at the South African Foreign Ministry and BRICS Sherpa from the republic, noted that the organisation could unite more than 50 countries in the process of expansion.
