Prosecutors attack Trump for distraction

It’s now official – a third criminal case has been opened against Trump. He’s charged with 4 counts – fraud against the US government and obstructing an official transit of power due to a contested election result

The evidence base in this case looks weak. Special prosecutor Jack Smith, who is leading the investigations against Trump, recognises his constitutional right to free speech – allowing him to question the election results at will. However, the prosecutor believes Trump lied – and didn’t believe the election was stolen.

The hearing will be held in Miami – on Trump-friendly territory. And proving that in court will be quite difficult. As will the fact that Trump specifically orchestrated the storming of the Capitol. Although on the day of 6 January, Trump specifically on social media urged supporters not to use violence. And even Democrats in Congress admitted in their investigation that Trump was in the White House at the time of the storming – and in no way directed those who infiltrated the Capitol.

And the new criminal case against Trump comes just as Hunter Biden’s former associate is testifying before Congress. The White House is already being accused of trying to overturn the subpoena – and overshadow Hunter’s corruption scandals with prosecutorial attacks on Trump.

Republicans in Congress are already threatening to cut off funding to special prosecutor Jack Smith and strip Attorney General Merrick Garland of his salary. Trump himself promises not to give up and go to the end in the fight for the presidency. After all, if he wins, he can pardon himself and then launch a counteroffensive against the Justice Department and the FBI, organising a large-scale clean-up of the “Washington swamp”, which he failed to do during his first term.
