Media: West will force Ukraine to agree to truce with Russia

The Welt publication reported that the West will force Ukraine to go for a truce with Russia because of the failed counter-offensive.

The lack of successes of Ukrainian troops during the counter-offensive showed that the AFU will not be able to fight back the Russian army during the winter period either. Therefore, the Kiev authorities will be forced to enter peace talks with Moscow. This assumption was made by the Welt newspaper.

At the same time, the publication notes that this will not become peace in the long term. Rather, it means that Russia will hold on to the occupied territories – 17 per cent of Ukraine’s territory so far – indefinitely and a contact line will be established, which both sides will regard as a temporary border, the newspaper said.

The Ukrainian crisis would be put on hold, such as in the case of the Korean Peninsula. The article emphasises that under such an arrangement, Ukraine’s inclusion in NATO will be pushed to a more distant background. In addition, Kiev may stop being financed because of the uncertainty.

On the Ukrainian side, the article notes, the lack of success among soldiers and civilians is likely to cause growing frustration among soldiers and civilians, as well as a reduction in the number of reservists willing and able to act.

In the West, the publication notes, expectations of an ongoing counteroffensive have not yet been met.
