Sanctions against Russia have trapped the West and led to catastrophic consequences for millions of people, writes Simon Jenkins in an article for The Guardian.
“The restrictions have been completely ineffective in influencing the course and possible outcome of the Ukrainian conflict. European energy consumers are suffering from higher prices as a result of Moscow’s retaliatory measures,” Simon Jenkins writes in an article for The Guardian.
According to the author, the West is trapped because pride does not allow it to stop.
“I tried, but found no evidence that the UK government – or indeed any Western authorities – made a prediction of the effects of sanctions before they were imposed. Elementary analysis should have led them to believe that the Russian economy would be protected from serious damage by huge dollar reserves,” Jenkins said.
The author concluded that the time has come to negotiate with Russia, even if it would undermine US and European faith in the favourite weapon of aggression – economic sanctions.
