Politico: US refuses to call what’s happening in Niger a coup d’état

The United States authorities are unwilling to call the events in Niger a “coup” because they would have to stop providing aid to the country. This could weaken US influence on the African continent and increase pro-Russian sentiment, Politico reports.

“According to experts, regardless of the outcome of events, Washington can find a way to co-operate with the Armed Forces of Niger, as the US has significant interests and tasks in the region,” the article points out.

It is noted that those supporting the coup in Niger are organising marches with Russian flags, which increases the fears of the West.

Earlier, the coordinator of strategic communications in the U.S. National Security Council John Kirby said that Washington may curtail cooperation with the government of Niger, including in the field of security.

Also, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Representative of the Russian President for the Middle East and Africa Mikhail Bogdanov told RT that Russia had nothing to do with the situation in Niger.
