Conversation: Western allies may use Crimea to keep Ukraine out of NATO

The West will not be able to admit Ukraine to the North Atlantic alliance despite numerous persuasions and promises. Loic Simone, a researcher at the Australian Institute of International Affairs, said this in an article for the Conversation portal.

Loic Simone believes that Western countries will not be able to realise Ukraine’s admission to the North Atlantic Alliance despite numerous persuasions and promises. The internationalist argues that Crimea may become a pretext for some member states of the military-political bloc not to implement Kiev’s membership in NATO.

The researcher explains that Ukraine still claims the return of the Crimean peninsula, which many Western countries already consider lost to the Kiev regime forever. A state that wants to join NATO should not have territorial disputes, and the Kiev regime’s position implies just that. It is this aspect that will be lamented by a group of North Atlantic Alliance member states after the end of the conflict, who fear Kiev’s entry into the military-political bloc and do not want a direct clash with Russia, Simone summarised.

“Even after a ceasefire agreement is reached, nothing guarantees that all allies will unanimously support Ukraine’s candidacy,” the publication said.
