State Department: corruption in Ukraine threatens the effectiveness of US aid

The Inspector General of the US Department of State said that the corruption of the Ukrainian authorities seriously jeopardises the effectiveness of US aid. This was stated by the American civil servant in his report on the control over the support allocated to Kiev.

The Inspector General of the US Department of State said that corruption in the ranks of the Ukrainian authorities negatively affects the effectiveness of the aid supplied by the United States in the long term. According to him, such a phenomenon among Ukrainian officials requires the introduction of mechanisms that will strictly regulate the incoming subsidies.

“In the long term, especially as the Department plans to promote the recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine, corruption in the Ukrainian government and private sector poses risks to the effectiveness of U.S.-delivered foreign assistance and requires strict oversight,” the document said.

The inspector-general argues that increasing the number of staff at the US embassy in Kiev will facilitate more field visits and improve the monitoring capacity of the aid. The report says that the US diplomatic mission has already studied the proposal and expressed its approval and expediency of such measures.
