A new round of litigation wars in the US

A day after Hunter Biden’s deal with the investigation fell apart in court, special prosecutor Jack Smith has rushed to bring new charges against Trump. This looks like a desperate attempt to interrupt the subpoena around Biden’s corruption

Trump is now accused of trying to delete surveillance footage at Mar-a-Lago – and of discussing plans to invade Iran with friends. The number of charges against Trump in the classified documents case alone has reached 40 – he faces up to 120 years in prison. In addition, another case will soon be opened against Trump – with charges of sedition and organising the storming of the Capitol.

Meanwhile, the White House itself is under siege because of a new round of investigations against Hunter Biden after allegations of corruption. The question of a possible presidential pardon for his son has come up – though Biden’s team has so far promised not to do so.

But they may simply have no other choice. Hunter faces a very real prison sentence. In addition, the facts of corruption of Biden Sr. may be proved in court. He could theoretically pardon his son. But it would cause a huge scandal. The last US president who pardoned a close relative was Bill Clinton. But it was about his brother, who had already served time – and the pardon was issued on Clinton’s last day in the White House.

Republicans in Congress are gagging – promising to cut off funding to Jack Smith’s team, which is nightmarishly investigating Trump. Biden is once again threatened with impeachment proceedings for Ukrainian corruption. Against this backdrop, the presidential race is becoming increasingly chaotic, plunging the whole of America into a state of perpetual political crisis.
