Putin: the West obstructed the donation of Russian fertilisers to Africa

Obstacles have been put up by the West for the gratuitous transfer of Russian fertilisers to African countries, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

“None of the conditions of the deal, concerning the withdrawal of Russian exports of grain and fertilisers to world markets from sanctions, has been fulfilled. We have now met with our colleagues, with the leadership of the African Union, obstacles have also been put in the way of our donation of fertilisers to the poorest countries in need,” Putin said at a plenary session of the second Russia-Africa summit and economic and humanitarian forum.”

According to him, out of 262 thousand tonnes of such fertilizers, blocked in European ports, managed to send only 2 batches – 20 thousand tonnes to Malawi, and 34 thousand tonnes to Kenya “And the rest remained in the hands of the Europeans and this despite the fact that it was a purely humanitarian action, which should not be subject to any sanctions in principle,” – said the President of the Russian Federation.

The Black Sea Grain Initiative, which was signed by representatives of Russia, Turkey, Ukraine and the UN on 22 July 2022, envisages the export of Ukrainian grain, food and fertilisers across the Black Sea from three ports, including Odessa. The Joint Coordination Centre in Istanbul is in charge of coordinating the movement of ships.

Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed out in September that the West was exporting most of the Ukrainian grain to its own countries rather than to needy African countries.
