ABC News: lawyers for former US President Trump have arrived at Special Prosecutor Smith’s office for a meeting
Donald Trump’s lawyers arrived at the office of special prosecutor Jack Smith, who oversees investigations into the former US president, for a meeting that may be related to new charges, ABC News reports.
Trump could soon face charges in connection with the storming of the Capitol by his supporters on 6 January 2021.
“Trump attorneys John Lauro and Todd Blanch are expected to meet with Smith’s team after receiving a letter warning that Trump is a target of the special prosecutor’s ongoing investigation into attempts to change the outcome of the 2020 election”, the TV station reported, citing informed sources.
The House of Representatives, which was investigating the events of 6 January during the Democratic majority, recommended that the Justice Department bring a number of charges against Trump, including sedition.
Trump himself insists he is innocent.
On the sixth of January 2021, Trump supporters attacked the Capitol, blocking the work of Congress for several hours. A female protester and a police officer were killed in the rioting, and three others died of non-violent causes. After the protesters were forced out of the building, congressmen approved Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election. Hundreds of people in the US were subsequently arrested by law enforcement on charges related to their participation in the assault.
