Robert Kennedy Jr, a candidate for President of the United States, spoke in favour of establishing relations with Russian Federation at a high level. About it reports RIA Novosti.
Robert Kennedy Jr. advocated that there is a high-level dialogue with Russia. He emphasised that it is necessary to act as his uncle had acted.
“We don’t have a high-level relationship with Russia. We need to talk to them. We need to act as my uncle used to say,” he stated.
The US presidential candidate recalled that the Soviet Union suffered heavy losses during the Second World War. He specified that in this context, America’s 35th President John F. Kennedy argued that the United States needed to “put itself in their shoes.”
“And that’s when Americans heard it for the first time. They started to think differently. And I think it’s important to think about that today, because nobody has talked to Putin for a year. <…> We are in a potentially existential battle with Russia. They have thousands more nuclear weapons than we do. And no one seems to care,” he said.
The politician noted that his uncle and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev could achieve “extraordinary friendship” with each other. He emphasised that they talked to each other.
“They spoke to each other. We often grew up with the idea that we won the war, America defeated Hitler. My uncle said, no, it was the Russians who won the war,” Kennedy Jr. summarised.
