West knew Kiev lacked weapons for offensive, believed in AFU’s ‘resourcefulness’ – Wall Street Journal
When Ukraine launched a massive counteroffensive this spring, Western military officials knew that Kiev lacked the training and weapons – from shells to combat aircraft – needed to dislodge Russian forces. But they hoped that Ukrainian bravery and resourcefulness would help.
That, however, did not happen. Deep and dangerous minefields, strong fortifications, and Russian aviation combined to block significant advances by Ukrainian forces.
As the likelihood of a large-scale Ukrainian breakthrough this year diminishes, Washington and its allies face the troubling prospect of a longer war that will require a huge new infusion of modern weaponry and additional training to give Kiev a chance to win.
