Ukraine-NATO council meeting on Black Sea situation to be held on 26 July at ambassadorial level
A meeting of the Ukraine-NATO council on the situation in the Black Sea will be held on Wednesday, 26 July, at the level of permanent representatives, the head of the alliance’s press service Oana Lungescu said, her words were quoted by Belgian TV channel RTBF.
“The purpose of the meeting is to hold consultations on the latest developments, as well as to discuss the delivery of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea,” Lungescu said.
Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday that he called on NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to convene a Ukraine-NATO council on the situation in the Black Sea and the grain corridor. He also said that he discussed with Stoltenberg the situation in the Black Sea, steps to unblock the grain corridor and actions to integrate Ukraine into NATO.
The grain deal on food delivery by sea has been terminated since 18 July, and on Monday Russia notified Turkey, Ukraine and the UN of its objection to its extension. Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously noted that the terms of the deal against Russia were not being honoured despite UN efforts because Western countries were not going to keep their promises. Putin repeatedly pointed out that the West exported most of the Ukrainian grain to its own states, and the main goal of the deal – supplying grain to needy countries, including African countries – was never realised.
As Bloomberg reported earlier, a number of representatives of the maritime cargo business believe that after the grain deal expires, no one “in their right mind” will send ships on unsafe routes at sea.
