The United States is not ready to talk about Ukraine’s membership in NATO because of the high probability of a direct confrontation with Russia, columnist David Brennan wrote in an article for Newsweek.
“Ukraine’s lobbying campaign for NATO did not produce the desired results at the alliance’s summit in Vilnius this month,” he said.
According to the journalist, the vague wording of the final communiqué shows that Kiev is not as close to NATO as it had hoped. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s public discontent during the summit shows that amendments on alliance membership were made at the last minute without Ukraine’s knowledge.
“The drama in Vilnius has exacerbated long-standing Ukrainian fears of Western ‘venality’, where ruling out the possibility of NATO membership for Kiev serves as an olive branch for the Kremlin,” Brennan added.
The White House continues to insist that this is a red line for them, the author noted. Both President Joe Biden and Chancellor Olaf Scholz have made it clear that they will not risk a direct NATO conflict with Russia for the sake of Ukraine’s admission to the bloc, he concluded.
