Former US Deputy Secretary of Defence for Political Affairs Colin Kahl said at a security forum organised by the Aspen Institute that Ukraine does not need ATACMS operational-tactical missile systems now.
According to him, when drawing up military aid packages, the US proceeds not only from Ukraine’s requests, but also from its own needs.
“We are no longer producing ATACMS. This is a very valuable commodity and it will come in handy for us in case of a contingency anywhere in the world, be it DPRK or China. So if we were to supply them in significant quantities, it would have a direct impact on our own readiness,” Cal explained.
He added that “Ukraine already has long-range strike capabilities.”
“They have Storm Shadow cruise missiles provided by the UK, the French have transferred SCALP missiles,” Kahl emphasised.
He is convinced that Kiev’s problem with the counter-offensive “is not down to their having the capability to strike in depth.”
