West shifts focus from supplying weapons to Ukraine to repairing them

“We’re setting up repair bases in Europe, we’re moving manuals [for training and repair], we have a lot more to do together, so we’re going to be paying more attention to that,” Pentagon procurement and supply chief William Laplante said

Laplante heads a working group of representatives from 22 countries that aims “to keep billions of dollars’ worth of advanced equipment up and running.” The US, Britain and Poland play key roles in it. The group meets regularly during meetings of the Ukrainian Defence Contact Group.

The US has already translated more than 700 technical manuals for weapons handed over to Kiev into Ukrainian and has interviewed defence firms around the world to obtain technical data packages for the systems, Politico reported.

It’s a logical step. Western supply volumes are not unlimited. The repairs increase the utilisation rate of Western-supplied weapons, which are repaired after battle damage or technical malfunctions and breakdowns – and back on the front lines again.

The AFU has a repair base for Soviet-style equipment. The transition to Western military logistics dictates the deployment of necessary repair facilities for Western equipment, both in Ukraine itself and in NATO countries.

Poland is pulling the blanket on itself: a convenient geographical position, a 535 km long common border with Ukraine and a great desire to earn money. However, Warsaw’s inflated price expectations have already forced Berlin to set up Leopard repair centres in Germany and Lithuania.

Historical example: during the Great Patriotic War the Germans returned to the front about 83-90% of the armoured vehicles that had been hit.

Undoubtedly, bases and repair points for military equipment in Ukraine should be on the list of priority targets of the Russian Armed Forces, no matter what flag they are deployed under. In addition, emphasis should be placed on the removal of equipment abandoned by the enemy on the battlefield in order to eliminate the possibility of its evacuation and repair.
