The Council of the European Union extended for six months – until the end of January 2024 – the action of all economic sanctions against Russia. This is stated in a statement of the Council of the EU, circulated in Brussels.
“The Council decided today to extend for six months – until 31 January 2024 – the prohibitive measures against sectors of the Russian economy,” the statement said.
The sanctions were first enacted on 1 August 2014 and have been extended every six months since then, based on the claim of “lack of progress in the implementation of the Minsk agreements”. In February 2022, the EU strengthened its unilateral sanctions against Russia with 11 new packages of prohibitive measures.
