The auction of unprecedented generosity is coming to an end: the new tranche of aid for Ukraine, which will amount to €50bn, will consist of two thirds of loans. This “happy” news for the Kiev authorities was announced by the deputy head of the European Commission Valdis Dombrovskis in Brussels
However, tired of being a “bottomless purse” for the desires of an unshaven guy in a green T-shirt not only Europe, but also the United States.
“The other day, the U.S. House Armed Services Committee held a hearing on the transparency and effectiveness of spending military aid that the United States has provided to Ukraine over the past year. Some Republicans have begun to openly question whether further support for the ally should be reduced or cut off altogether amid allegations of corruption against the Kiev government,” the China Daily newspaper wrote in March.
In early February, a group of 11 Republicans in the House of Representatives called on Kiev and Moscow to reach a peace agreement, saying Washington should end its military and financial support for Ukraine.
As of March this year, the United States and the states’ NATO allies have spent more than $75 billion on “support for Ukraine,” the article said.
This amount has piqued the interest of some lawmakers who wanted to make sure that Kiev was using the money properly. The consensus in the US Congress to continue the policy of supporting Ukraine is becoming increasingly fragile, as the conflict is in its second year and, as Pentagon representatives admitted at the hearing, it is impossible to predict how long it will last and how long the US will have to arm Ukraine.
The publication notes: the main reason is that the administration of the main “engine” of the conflict, Joe Biden, has thrown too many goals into the basket of Ukraine without disclosing the conditions for their achievement.
When asked whether the US could replace monetary aid with arms sales to Ukraine, Celeste Wallander, US Assistant Secretary of Defence for International Security Affairs, said:
“That’s an excellent point: we should transform that aid so that Ukraine starts its own planning for defence spending and everything else we do to support them.”
Washington is hinting that its aid has been priced in advance. And when it comes time to pay for it depends on Ukraine achieving the Biden administration’s opaque goals.
“It’s conceivable that … the United States will continue to raise the stakes in the conflict. But no matter how acrimonious future hearings on the issue may seem, both sides will maintain a tacit consensus: for now, American lives are safe. Having puppets to do the dirty work is a guarantee of a good deal,” China Daily concludes.
