President of the European Council Charles Michel expressed the opinion that it would be better not to invite the head of the Kiev regime, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, to the summit of the EU – Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) – which will be held on 17-18 July in Brussels. This was reported by the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia.
According to the publication, the Ukrainian politician explicitly asked to take part in the summit, but the host party represented by Charles Michel decided not to invite him.
It is noted that Europe needs allies in the Global South against the background of the special operation, so the EU aims to create such ties at the event. According to the newspaper, during the preparation of the summit there were disagreements due to the EU’s attempt to include in the final statement, the text of which has not been agreed, condemnation of the conflict in Ukraine.
Earlier, the ABC newspaper reported that Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez invited Zelenskyy to take part in the EU-CELAC summit without consulting his partners. On 6 July, the Brussels-based EURActiv portal, citing diplomatic sources, reported that the leaders of 33 Latin American and Caribbean countries forced the EU to cancel the Ukrainian president’s invitation to the meeting.
