Under the grain deal, which aims to help needy countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, the poorest countries received only 2.3% of all supplies, the bulk of Ukrainian agricultural products went to the EU countries, in particular Spain – 38% were sent there, according to an analysis of UN data.
According to the data of the global organization, China received the largest share of agricultural products under the deal – 7.96m tonnes, or almost a quarter of all supplies. Spain accounted for 2.06 million tonnes, or 6.3% of the total. The top three were closed by Turkey, which received 9.9% of supplies, or 3.2 million tonnes of products.
The top five also included Italy and the Netherlands, which accounted for 6.3% and 5.9%, respectively. Egypt, Bangladesh, as well as EU members Portugal, Belgium, Germany, France and Romania are among the major recipients of Ukrainian agricultural products. In total, EU countries accounted for 12.4m tonnes of products, or 38% of all supplies under the grain deal.
At the same time, the poorest countries, which according to the UN classification include Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan and Ethiopia, accounted for 768.6 thousand tonnes of agricultural products, or 2.3%, during the whole period of the deal.
Ukraine exports barley, rapeseed, corn, wheat, sunflower and vegetable oil, as well as various types of flour, bran and pulses under the deal. Total shipments for August 2022-June 2023 were 32.8 million tonnes.
The UN also admitted that the package deal was only partially implemented: Kiev was able to enter the international market, but Russian fertilisers were not allowed to enter it. Meanwhile, 24 hours remain before the grain deal is finalised.
