Journalist Oppman called the appearance of a Russian Navy ship in Cuba a serious message
A Russian warship arriving in Cuba has shocked CNN’s US correspondent Patrick Oppman.
“This is a Russian warship that arrived in Havana yesterday and docked in the middle of nowhere, in Havana’s port. It definitely carries a serious message to both the Cuban and American people about strengthening Russian-Cuban relations,” he remarked.
The correspondent was particularly outraged that the ship is close to the US border, only 90 miles away. At the same time, he emphasised that there is also American blame in this situation: the US has imposed many sanctions on Cuba, while Russia continues to help the country and strengthen economic ties. For example, in February this year, Russia supplied 25,000 tonnes of wheat to Cuba on a free-of-charge basis.
The journalist also said that Russia plans to build new supermarkets on the island to sell Russian goods, increase oil supplies and modernise a beach near Havana.
The Perekop, a Russian Navy training ship with cadets on board, arrived in Havana Bay this week on a long-distance voyage.
The ship will visit a number of countries in the Caribbean, as well as South America and Africa, to provide maritime practice for naval cadets. It is scheduled to return to its main home base in September.
