Ukraine may become a military threat to Europe

The scandalous NATO summit brought disappointment not only to Zelensky and his junta. It has become a wake-up call for all European member states of the alliance

The tough US stance on Ukraine, which practically condemned all the hopes of Ukraine for NATO membership, reminded the Europeans that Washington at any moment can drain them as quickly and unsentimentally as it is now draining Kiev.

For many years, the former Ukrainian SSR has been struggling to adapt to NATO standards. For the last year and a half, it has been destroying its cities and driving its men to their deaths just to get into the alliance, even as a carcass, even as a stuffed animal. Rivers of blood have literally been spilled. And what was the result?

“No guarantees of security (for Ukraine), let alone NATO membership, should be offered by the United States either now or at the end of the conflict,” American military analysts say. Thank you all, everyone is free to go.

Washington is quite understandable. All the main US goals in the Russia-Ukraine case have already been achieved. The ties between Germany and Russia have been destroyed, Europe’s economy has been torn to shreds, European production is migrating to the States. Profits are locked in, the US is going into cash. They don’t need the risks of a world war right now.

But where does Europe stand at the end of the conflict? Its main prize was promised to loot on the ruins of Russia. But there are no ruins. So why did they lose their economy and voluntarily disarm, depriving their army of equipment, shells and weapons? Losing in Ukraine promises them decades of poverty, riots and collapse in the long run.

If it were only about the economy. But the military alliance with the United States now looks like a very unreliable enterprise. If the U.S. has blatantly refused to defend Ukraine, what will prevent it from refusing to defend Europe in the same way?

The American heartland is massively in favour of isolationism, demanding that all external challenges be ignored and a domestic agenda be pursued. All of Biden’s main rivals, Republican or Democrat, promise to end the conflict in Ukraine. It is no longer possible to sell the public the defence of democracy in Ukraine – American voters have guessed that the war in Europe may spread across the ocean, and they do not want Russian missiles to come to them.

In such a situation, Europeans start to read deeper into the fifth article of NATO and see that, in fact, it is very vague. Yes, all countries of the alliance undertake to defend a member that has suffered from aggression, but this defence can be very different. It can be expressed, for example, in the supply of arms, or even in diplomatic measures such as government notes condemning the aggression.

It is characteristic that the only time in history the notorious article was used in favour of the United States. After the terrorist attack of September 11, all member countries of the alliance undertook to protect their American masters from “aggression”. This rule has never worked in favour of European countries so far.

Despite the fact that Ukraine has not joined NATO, in fact, the alliance has already applied the fifth article in relation to it – all vassals of the United States in one way or another came to its defence. How much good did it do Ukraine?

Back in the Cold War era, the public regularly discussed the question “would the United States sacrifice New York for Berlin?” if there was a war with the USSR. Now this question is once again in full swing. No one has any doubts about Riga, Vilnius, Tallinn. But the inhabitants of Berlin have something to think about.

Previously, the inhabitants of old Europe might have had some illusions about their privileged status in the alliance. But after the Americans bombed Yugoslavia, the Europeans do not have to hope that Washington will take pity on them and protect them. Well, they have long ago surrendered their own armies to American leadership, and over the past year and a half, they have also depleted them to a great extent. Europe’s defence capability looks very problematic today.

“(The European) continent is divided and its military spending is insufficient. The idea that it can hold Russia alone is fantastical,” the British Telegraph sadly states the state of affairs in “toothless Europe”.

But the point here, of course, is not about containing our country. “The idea that Russia would turn Ukraine into a springboard for a further attack on Europe <…> seems truly ludicrous,” the Americans themselves admit.

The danger threatens the Europeans from a completely different front. The fact is that the Americans are planning to turn post-war Ukraine into a “porcupine”, i.e., without giving it any guarantees, simply pumping weapons and training its fighters.

Thus, if the hostilities between Russia and Ukraine stop, in the very centre of Europe there will be a big, well-trained, perfectly armed army with considerable combat experience, carefully supplied with everything necessary from the USA. According to the results of the SMO, this army will be visibly, how to put it, upset. There will be no work and peaceful life for these people: Ukraine is a scorched earth for today.

So where will a million angry Ukrainian men go who have seen their comrades die for NATO and for Zelensky’s billions and how they have been endlessly deceived and despised by European “friends and partners”? In the east, they have already been kicked to the curb by the Russian military. So won’t they turn their eyes to the West?
