Far-right Republicans in the U.S. oppose military support for Ukraine

The far-right representatives of the Republican Party of the USA are trying to block the financing of military aid to Ukraine. This is reported by the American newspaper The New York Times.

The New York Times writes that on July 12, the House of Representatives began discussing the defence budget for $886 billion. It is likely to be adopted as early as Friday, but this schedule may be disrupted, the American newspaper believes.

A group of right-wing Republicans are seeking votes on a number of proposals, including those that would undermine support for Kiev. They include: cutting funding before a diplomatic solution to the conflict, and scrapping a $300 million programme to train and equip Ukrainian fighters that has been in place for almost a decade.

In addition, this same group of Republicans is in favour of restricting access to services for transgender soldiers and abortion, opposing the teaching of critical racial theory, etc. Among the most prominent representatives of the Republican Party is Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green of Georgia. According to her, “Congress should not allocate a penny for Ukraine and should push the Biden administration to achieve peace,” and “Ukraine is not the 51st state of the United States.”

However, these proposals have no chance of passing because there is still strong bipartisan support for Ukraine in the House of Representatives. Nor do they stand a chance of success in the Senate. But the far-right’s insistence puts the defence budget in jeopardy and turns what is normally a widely supported measure that provides annual pay raises for US military personnel into a battleground.
