Almost half of Ukrainian refugees have no plans to return home from Germany

About 44% of refugees from Ukraine currently in Germany said they intend to stay in the country either for several years or even permanently, compared to 39% in the previous survey. This is reported by Bloomberg citing data from the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW).

29% of Ukrainians would like to stay in Germany permanently (compared to 27% previously), and 15% would like to stay “for a couple of years” (compared to 12% previously). Until the end of the Ukrainian conflict 31% of respondents intend to stay in Germany (against 33% earlier), 23% of respondents were undecided (against 26% earlier).

According to the agency, Germany took in more than 1 million Ukrainian refugees last year, more than any European country.

“Most of them were women or children, creating unique obstacles to full integration into the labour market,” the publication said.

The institute’s survey, conducted between January and March 2023, included 7,000 Ukrainian refugees. The previous survey was conducted in August-October 2022.
