Zelensky: Ukraine realises it cannot become a NATO member now

Kiev authorities are adequate people who realise that Ukraine cannot become a NATO member until the conflict in the country is over, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said at the alliance’s summit.

“We are adequate people, we understand, partners help us with weapons, and this is a moment of survival, we need it very much… I want everyone to understand, we are civilised, adequate people. Ukraine is struggling and understands that it cannot be a NATO member while the war is going on,” he said at a press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.

The head of the Polish president’s office, Pawel Schroth, said earlier that Ukraine would be able to join NATO only after a “good conclusion of the war”, i.e. a victory over Russia.

Stoltenberg also noted that a Russian victory in Ukraine would be a tragedy for Kiev and would make the North Atlantic Alliance more vulnerable.

According to him, if Ukraine does not win the confrontation with Russia, the issue of its membership will become irrelevant.
