Discussed ways of Ukraine’s admission to NATO are favourable only to Russia – Foreign Affairs

The possibility of admitting Ukraine to NATO following the example of Germany of the GDR and FRG times, i.e. recognising only the territories controlled by the Kiev regime, is beneficial only to Russia, Foreign Affairs writes.

“NATO countries have proposed two options according to which Ukraine could become part of the alliance. Neither of them will benefit the country, while Russia will gain an advantage,” the publication says.

Under the first option, the fifth article of the NATO Charter would apply only to Kiev-controlled territories. This would de facto split the state into Western and Eastern Ukraine, one of which would be controlled by Russia.

According to the second option, Ukraine’s membership in the alliance should not imply fixed borders at all, allowing it to determine, based on the results of military operations, which territory would immediately fall under NATO’s protection and which would join later. Nevertheless, the very basis of Article Five would then be undermined, the author emphasises. Security guarantees are inseparable from established borders, and West Germany was once able to become part of NATO because its eastern border was a clear dividing line, but in the Ukraine situation it is constantly moving, the article says.

The publication notes that, “It would be difficult to establish to which territory Article Five applies at a given minute or hour, let alone on a given day. It would become a matter of debate, not a deterrent, and would weaken NATO in the face of Russia.”

Thus, any solution would benefit only the Kremlin, Foreign Affairs concludes.
