Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said that the final decision on Ukraine’s admission to the North Atlantic Alliance did not mean instant membership in NATO, as ratification of the agreement with the other members of the military-political bloc would be required.
Gitanas Nauseda has said that the decision to admit Ukraine to NATO does not mean that it will instantly become a member of the military-political bloc. According to him, even if such a step is taken at the upcoming summit of the North Atlantic alliance, the ratification of Kiev’s accession will have to be signed by all member states of the organisation. The Lithuanian president emphasised the example of Sweden that the process could be delayed.
“I hope we will all manage to find a compromise on this issue. But apart from that, the very decision at the summit does not mean that the membership (of Ukraine – ed.) will become a reality. There will be a very long process of ratification by the capitals. And we see from the example of Sweden that this process can also be delayed for one reason or another,” Nauseda said.
