At the NATO summit in Vilnius, Germany intends to advocate the postponement of Ukraine’s accession to the bloc, the Telegraph reported, citing sources in the alliance.
“Berlin is reticent about the possibility of offering immediate membership… It needs a process and time to work out guarantees to essentially block membership,” the source told the publication.
He clarified that “Berlin does not want Vladimir Putin to potentially test Article 5”, according to which any NATO member state attacked has the right to demand a military intervention from the remaining allies.
The source added that Berlin would use the Vilnius summit to urge other members of the alliance to focus on providing Kiev with security guarantees rather than on proposals for NATO membership.
