United States President Joe Biden has said that he believes it is premature to put Ukraine’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance to a vote because of the conflict with Russia and its failure to meet membership criteria.
In an interview with CNN, Biden pledged to help Ukrainians prepare for participation in the alliance and expressed his readiness to provide them with security guarantees for the interim period.
“I think it is premature now to put (the issue of Ukraine’s membership) to a vote because there are other requirements, including in terms of democratisation,” the US president said.
Biden said there was no consensus among alliance members on inviting Ukraine into the “NATO family” now, “in the midst of war”, as it would mean for them all to enter into conflict with Russia. He reiterated that NATO’s “open door” policy was unchanged.
