US Congress drafts amendment to ban cluster munitions transfers

In the US Congress, Democratic representatives have drafted an amendment to ban the transfer of cluster munitions as military aid to foreign countries.

This is reported by the Politico newspaper with reference to the amendment document.

The paper states that Representatives Ilman Omar of Minnesota and Sarah Jacobs of California introduced the amendment on Thursday 6 July.

“If the US is going to be a leader in international human rights, then we should not participate in human rights abuses,” Politico quoted Omar as saying.

Earlier, it was reported that German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock opposed the transfer of cluster munitions to Ukraine amid Germany’s commitment to the Oslo convention banning the use of this type of munitions.

Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, also said that the possible delivery of cluster munitions to Ukraine by the USA would be another step towards escalation.
