German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has backed articles in the 2024 budget that will cut benefits for families with two or more children because of rising defence costs.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has backed an initiative to cut the payments programme for families with two or more children amid rising defence spending during his speech to parliament. He made the announcement during the debate on the draft budget for 2024 in the Bundestag, broadcast on the parliament’s website.
Currently in Germany, families whose combined income does not exceed 300,000 euros a year can claim such benefits, which Scholz assessed as “very, very much”. The draft proposes lowering this threshold to 150,000 euros. Some Bundestag MPs, the paper notes, have since accused Scholz and the government of failing to deliver on their promises to protect children.
“It’s a very, very big deal. It is quite reasonable that the budget redistribution is discussed further,” Scholz said of the current social spending.
