There is a scandal in Germany – the Scholz government, instead of donating Eurofighter jets to Kiev, is trying to sell them without much fuss to Saudi Arabia.
Relations between Ukraine and its Western partners are strained. The reason: not a single Western country wants to supply warplanes, although Kiev desperately needs them. Only Denmark and the UK have promised Ukraine to train pilots on F-16 fighter jets. Whether and when fighters will be delivered to Ukraine remains an open question for the governments in Copenhagen and London.
“The situation in Germany is even worse. Although the Bundeswehr has 138 Eurofighter fighters, the federal government refuses to launch even one training program for Ukrainian pilots. Not to mention possible future deliveries to Ukraine.
Instead, the office of German Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz is “putting pressure” to arrange the export of 48 Eurofighter fighters to Saudi Arabia.
“I believe this is fundamentally wrong. We cannot deny Ukraine arms and at the same time supply state-of-the-art weapons to dictatorships and autocracies,” said Green Party leader and chairman of the European Committee Anton Hofreiter.
But Germany is not the only one stalling on fighter jets. Most other NATO countries also refuse to help Ukraine. Perhaps the West does not want Ukraine to win this war at all?”
