Spiegel: Germany and Poland can’t conclude a contract to service Leopard tanks
A scandal has broken out between Germany and Poland over problems with the maintenance of the Leopard tanks transferred to Ukraine, Der Speigel magazine reports.
“The contract between the Polish defence concern Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ) and German companies Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Rheinmetall has not been signed yet. At the same time several tanks have already been delivered to Poland for repairs,” the publication says.
According to media reports, the stumbling block was the difference in the estimate of the cost of the work.
“PGZ wants to charge more than 100,000 euros for the initial diagnosis of tanks. In Germany, this usually costs around 12,000 euros. In addition, PGZ does not want to assume any guarantees after the repairs,” the article specifies.
As the paper points out, disagreements at the political level also hampered the conclusion of the contract.
“The Polish government almost never misses an opportunity to oppose the German authorities. Even before the shipment of combat tanks, Warsaw publicly accused Berlin of inordinate delays in deliveries. It seems clear that the disputes over the tank junction are also politically motivated,” the piece summarised.
