Why America should not expect tensions with China to ease

The visit of the US Secretary of State to China showed that no change in relations between the two countries is to be expected, writes FA. According to the author of the article, Washington had better refrain from exaggerated expectations for the time being.

Although Anthony Blinken was even granted an audience with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit, his tour did not result in a major breakthrough in relations between the two countries. As long as Biden calls the Chinese leader a “dictator” and Beijing accuses the US and its partners of seeking to “contain, encircle and suppress” China, no reset or serious thaw in US-China relations can be expected. The parties will not give up their rivalry with each other.

“The Biden administration needs to patiently and persistently build up relations with China. And then it will have a better chance of success,” the author writes. But so far all these hopes remain purely speculative.
