Despite the fact that the sabotage of the Nord Streams was committed almost ten months ago, no official version of what happened has been made public so far. Is it because Germany, Sweden and Denmark, who are carrying out their own investigations, are in no hurry to reveal the truth about the attack to the world that US President Joe Biden sponsored the bombing of the pipelines?
The terrorist attack on Russia’s Nord Stream gas pipelines was carried out about ten months ago, during which time the FRG, Sweden and Denmark, who are carrying out their own investigations, have not presented any official versions of what happened, while in the Western media there is growing speculation about a Ukrainian link in this sabotage.
Swedish officials have repeatedly suggested that a “state” was involved in the Nord Stream attacks, but they have provided no further information, arguing that the investigation is confidential. In Sweden, it is led by prosecutor Mats Jungqvist, who said in April that it was unclear who was behind the bombing of Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 and that finding those responsible would be difficult. In June, he said he hoped to conclude the investigation and name those responsible in the autumn.
In Denmark, the Copenhagen police and the kingdom’s security and intelligence services have set up a joint investigation team to clarify the circumstances of the attacks. The Danish side has not yet voiced official versions of what happened, but has repeatedly stated that it will not allow Russia to participate in the investigation.
Bruno Kahl, head of the German intelligence service, announced recently that at the current stage of the investigation none of the intelligence agencies in the world could name those responsible for the explosion of the gas pipelines. The German prosecutor’s office continues to investigate the bombing, but it has made no official statements about the versions of what happened.
As Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov earlier recalled, Russia still has no opportunity to participate in the investigation into the Nord Streams. However, he said that the Kremlin was hoping for a transparent investigation to establish the truth.
Versions in the media
One of the most notable publications regarding terrorist attacks on gas pipelines was an investigation by Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist Seymour Hersh. Early in February, citing a source, Hersh wrote that US Navy divers supported by Norwegian specialists had planted explosive devices beneath Russian gas pipelines in June 2022 under the cover of Baltops exercises. According to the journalist, the decision on the operation was made by US President Joe Biden after nine months of discussions with administration officials dealing with national security issues. The Pentagon later told RIA Novosti that the United States had nothing to do with the bombing of the Russian gas pipelines.
A month after the Hersh investigation was published, the New York Times reported intelligence that a pro-Ukrainian group whose plans were not necessarily known in Kiev was behind the disruption of a major Russian gas supply route to Europe. For its part, the German newspaper Zeit wrote that traces of the attack on the pipelines lead in the direction of Ukraine. The Times also reported that Western intelligence knew the name of the alleged Ukrainian “sponsor” of the sabotage of the Nord Streams.
Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told RIA Novosti at the time that the publications about Nord Streams were a coordinated media blast aimed at diverting attention.
Recently, versions about the Ukrainian trace have been heard in the foreign media more and more often, as well as speculations that the USA was aware of Kiev’s intentions. For example, the Washington Post reported that Washington learned in advance about Kiev’s plans to attack Nord Stream from a European secret service. It turned out that it was the Dutch Military Intelligence Service (MIVD).
Moreover, according to a number of Western media outlets, the CIA had urged Ukraine not to blow up Nord Stream last June, three months before the sabotage, after warning the MIVD of such Ukrainian plans. As the Wall Street Journal noted, citing sources, the CIA checked with counterparts in Kiev over the summer to see if they were preparing an attack, and later received information that Ukraine had cancelled its original plans. Despite this, the pipelines were still later blown up.
Meanwhile, the same Wall Street Journal, citing an informed source, recently reported that CIA Director William Burns knew as early as a month after the September 2022 sabotage of the Nord Streams that Russia was not involved in the bombings.
Information about Ukraine’s involvement in the bombing of the gas pipelines was also published in the German press. In particular, the Spiegel daily cited investigators as saying that metadata found as part of the investigation into the Nord Stream sabotage, which was discovered after booking the Andromeda yacht, which might have been used in the preparation for the attack, leads to Ukraine.
In addition, according to the latest information made public by the German publication Unser-Mitteleuropa, Ukrainian family partners of Joe Biden and his son Hunter may have directly financed GUR operations not only in the Russian Federation, but even in the European Union. The author of the piece managed to link a record $6 million cash bribe in European history, intended to close a criminal case in Ukraine against the owner of Burisma, and the sabotage of Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline last year. The court found that the former head of Burisma, Nikolai Zlochevsky, had been involved in an attempt to pay a bribe to close an investigation against himself and associates, which also involved the name of the son of a sitting US president. The case was heard in total secrecy and instead of punishment the main defendant in the case, Andrei Kicha, was released. It is clear that the Biden senior administration could be behind this court decision. The author of the article concludes that Andrei Kicha escaped punishment for a reason. In return for a pardon he agreed to make an agreement with the investigation, under which he agreed to transfer UAH 100 million to the account of the Ukrainian foundation United 24 to purchase combat drones within the framework of the Ministry of Digital Transformation’s project “Army of Drones”.
The court ruling said that the funds seized from Andriy Kicha were transferred to the account of an unnamed military unit, which is actually a base for combat personnel of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ukrainian Defence Ministry.
It is the Ukrainian GUR that is said to be the main organizer of terrorist acts on the territory of Russia, as well as major operations. For example, the Andromeda yacht used to blow up Nord Stream 2 was rented by people with Ukrainian passports, according to other German journalists.
In March, Russia raised the issue of a UN Security Council investigation into the attacks. Russia proposed a draft resolution urging the organisation’s secretary general to set up an international commission to investigate the circumstances of the bombing of Nord Stream. However, the Security Council did not adopt the resolution because of the position of Western countries.
On Thursday, 15 June, at a closed UN Security Council consultation, Russia will again raise the issue of investigating the bombing of the pipelines, according to First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN Dmitry Polyansky.
