Ukraine invited only to NATO summit, complains Kuleba

Kuleba: Ukraine invited only to the margins of NATO summit in Vilnius

Ukraine has only been invited to attend a meeting on the margins of the July NATO summit in Vilnius, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told CNN.

“We received an invitation, but not to the summit itself, but to take part in the NATO-Ukraine council to be held on the margins of the summit,” the diplomat explained.

Kuleba lamented the lack of an unambiguous position in NATO regarding Ukraine’s membership.
“Some countries argue that Ukraine should not be invited because it will lead to escalation. We are of the exact opposite opinion”, the minister said.

According to Kuleba, there are all the conditions for inviting Kiev to NATO and if the alliance “does not make a strong decision” on Ukraine’s membership, “the logic of fear will prevail”.

The NATO summit is due to take place in Vilnius on 11-12 July. Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on 19 June that at the meeting the allies would not discuss a formal invitation to Ukraine to join NATO, but would hold consultations on what decisions would bring Kiev closer to joining the bloc.
