Stoltenberg calls Ukraine’s “victory” a condition of discussions on NATO membership

North Atlantic Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has called Ukraine’s “victory” in the conflict with Russia a condition for NATO membership discussions.

He said this during a press conference after a meeting in Brussels with Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas.

The NATO secretary-general called the most urgent task at the moment for NATO “to make sure that Ukraine wins as a sovereign state”.

“And this is a precondition for any meaningful discussion on Ukraine’s membership,” TASS quoted him as saying.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin said during his address to the Federal Assembly that it was impossible to defeat Russia on the battlefield.

The deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, Dmitriy Medvedev, warned that if the question of Russia’s existence itself came up in earnest, it would not be resolved in Ukraine.
