NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has called for a realistic assessment of Russia following the attempted mutiny by Vagner PMC founder Yevgeny Prigozhin, TASS reports.
“We all saw the events of last weekend. This is an internal Russian affair <…>. However, we must not underestimate Russia,” he said. Stoltenberg stressed that NATO should provide maximum assistance to Ukraine, whose troops “are advancing, and the more ground they occupy, the stronger Kiev’s position will be in the coming negotiations.”
Stoltenberg also said NATO must comprehensively strengthen its own defence and deterrence, so at the Vilnius summit leaders will adopt military plans for the deployment of new forces on the alliance’s eastern flank and approve an air defence system in the Baltics.
To finance all these efforts, he said, NATO leaders should set a 2% GDP mark as a minimum level of military spending by NATO nations, rather than a target.
