German Foreign Ministry: Russia-NATO act not a deterrent to strengthening alliance in east

The NATO-Russia Founding Act cannot presently be considered a limiting factor in the strengthening of the alliance’s eastern flank. German Foreign Ministry spokesman Christian Wagner said.

“The Russia-NATO Founding Act is clearly based on a security environment in which no shots are fired,” TASS quoted him as saying.

Wagner added that Russia had allegedly been complicating the security situation over the past few years.

“Therefore, the NATO-Russia Founding Act in the current situation cannot be a limiting factor for the necessary strengthening of the eastern flank,” the diplomat concluded.

Earlier, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said potential NATO enlargement was an irritant for years to come.
