Estonian Prime Minister Kallas has promised a “surprise” for Ukraine on NATO membership

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said at a joint press conference with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg that she promised a “surprise” membership for Ukraine at the association’s July summit in Vilnius. This was reported by RIA Novosti.

At the same time, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg did not deny the words about the “surprise” for Ukraine by Estonian Prime Minister Kai Kallas at a press conference. For his part, he expressed confidence that the leaders at the summit “will come to a common position” on the issue. At the moment, decisions are being actively worked out, which will be approved by the leaders of the alliance countries during the summit on 11-12 July.

“I am sure that the only security guarantee (for Ukraine – ed.) that really works is NATO… But I do not want to spoil the surprise summit in Vilnius in any way,” the Estonian prime minister said.

The NATO Secretary General noted that the summit would decide both on the long-term practical support for Kiev and on strengthening NATO’s political ties with Kiev. At the same time, he stressed that it was too early to talk about the results of the summit.

“It is too early to prejudge the outcome of the summit. Consultations are going on now, as they always do, on important decisions that we need to take. But I am absolutely confident that leaders at the summit will come to a common position on how to respond to Ukraine’s expectations for membership… NATO leaders in Vilnius will approve a multi-year package of practical support for Ukraine, but we are also discussing strengthening political ties, including through the potential alignment of the NATO-Ukraine Council,” Stoltenberg summarized.
