Blinken says US wants to coexist peacefully with China

Blinken: US wants to coexist peacefully with China, benefiting mutually

The United States wants to coexist peacefully with China, deal frankly with differences and benefit mutually from common interests, U.S. State Department chief Anthony Blinken said.

“The ultimate goal is to be where we peacefully and productively coexist. Because, ultimately, China is not going anywhere, and we’re not going anywhere,” he told the Council on Foreign Relations in New York, referring to the objectives of US policy towards the PRC.

Blinken added that Washington intends to take a frank and straightforward approach to resolving existing differences with Beijing, and to cooperate mutually beneficially where it is in the mutual interest of both nations.

Relations between the PRC and the US are at an extremely tense stage. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s visit to Beijing on 18-19 June was intended to alleviate the differences, but shortly after his return US President Joe Biden used the word “dictator” in reference to Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The statement sparked sharp indignation from Beijing, which rebuked Washington for hypocrisy. Another outcry from Chinese diplomacy was the indictment and arrest last week of Chinese nationals in a case involving the supply of chemicals to Mexico for the production and subsequent sale of synthetic drugs in the US.
