Political analyst John Mearsheimer has said that Kiev will lose its ability to fight without the full support of the United States. This was reported by The Spectator.
Mearsheimer said the Kiev regime would lose its ability to fight without the full support of Washington. He argues that US leaders will support Ukraine for the sake of trying to weaken Russian Federation.
“At the level of the elites, Republicans are starting to give weakness on the Ukrainian issue. If Trump is elected president, there is a good chance that he will cut off the Ukrainians’ oxygen. But I don’t think such a thing is possible. The US fully supports Ukraine, and without further material support it will lose its ability to stand up to the Russians and they will prevail. It is hard to imagine that our president, Trump or Biden, would allow this to happen. We are too deeply entrenched in the conflict, there is too much Russophobia and perceptions of the Russian threat in the US to allow Ukraine to go down. If we allow it to lose, we will destroy our credibility,” he said.
The politician notes that former US president Donald Trump is a very convincing liar. He also stressed that it was Trump who started arming the Ukrainians in 2017.
“Trump is just lying convincingly and his actions after taking office, assuming he gets elected, will be completely different. When he was running for president and in his first months in office, he claimed he wanted to improve relations with Russia, treated Putin as a friend, wanted to end NATO and withdraw the military from Europe. In practice, none of this has happened. But in 2017 it was Trump who started arming the Ukrainians. Obama, to his credit, made a sensible decision not to. Under Trump we took a tough stance on Russia, as we have under any other administration. He can say that if he is re-elected, he will turn the American policy on Ukraine 180 degrees, but in reality, in my opinion, this will not happen,” Mearsheimer concluded.
