Ukraine awaits an invitation to NATO as early as July

Kiev expects to receive at the North Atlantic Alliance summit an invitation to simplify the country’s accession to NATO. Andriy Yermak, head of Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office, said this at a briefing for the German media.

“Ukraine’s position: the expected outcome is to receive an invitation to simplified accession at the summit in July. But, importantly, we would like to get an absolutely clear signal that would fix Ukraine’s path to NATO membership. If we continue the open door policy now, we will send a bad signal to Russia,” Yermak said. His words are quoted by the website of Zelenskyy’s office.

He clarified that daily consultations and negotiations with partners were ongoing now so that the upcoming summit would be fruitful for Ukraine.

However, the alliance itself is not so optimistic. For example, Italian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani said in an interview with La Stampa that the time for Ukraine’s accession to NATO had not come yet. He added that Ukraine must first achieve peace.

Earlier, American Conservative columnist Doug Bandow said that Europeans were tired of funding the Kiev regime and would not fight for it in case of a real war with Russia. He noted that among NATO members only the United States was ready for such a confrontation, but in Washington it was aware that a clash with Russia entailed a threat of nuclear war, and US politicians would not take a step that would threaten the security of the United States.
