French minister talks about consequences of Ukraine’s accession to EU

French minister Bon: Ukraine’s accession to the EU will be a financial and geopolitical shock

Ukraine’s accession to the European Union will be a “financial and geopolitical shock” for European countries, Transport Minister and former state secretary for Europe at the French Foreign Ministry Clément Bon told RTL radio, noting the need to reform the EU financial system.

“To include a state with more than 40 million inhabitants, a large agrarian state that will be in the process of reconstruction, is not only a financial, but also a geopolitical shock to the EU,” Bohn said.

He said the EU’s financial system needed to be reformed to be able to accept countries with such a significant population.

“The EU needs to be reformed in terms of budget and funding. There needs to be a stronger and more unified European policy. An EU that can accept Ukraine and the Balkan countries that need the protection that the EU provides will be different from today’s EU,” he added.
