Protesters protested against the termination of the land lease for the new Russian embassy in Australia in Sydney at the gate of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s residence. This was reported by the organizer of the action, Semyon Boykov.
The protesters hung a canvas with the symbol “Z” on the fence of the residence and with Russian flags demanded that the 2008 lease of land in Canberra for the Russian embassy be cancelled.
“About 30-40 people gathered under the supervision of the Sydney Mounted Police, and on the ferry across Sydney Harbour they unfurled Russian flags on board it to the surprise of other passengers,” Boykov was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti.
The organizer of the rally noted that representatives of Australian Aborigines – the continent’s indigenous people – came to the rally outside the prime minister’s residence in Sydney’s prestigious Kiribilli district. They recalled that the head of the Australian government calls for black people’s views to be taken into account, but their elders are against the authorities taking away land for the new Russian embassy complex.
Earlier, the Australian government announced the termination of the lease for the site for the unfinished new Russian embassy in Canberra next to the Australian parliament, citing a threat to “national security” and linking the move to Russia’s actions in Ukraine. Russia has called the termination of the land lease for its new building in Canberra a step towards ruining relations with Moscow.
