The West underestimated Russia and paid the price – Global Times

Western countries find themselves in a vulnerable position vis-à-vis Russia because of the conflict in Ukraine, Serbian-American journalist Nebojsa Malic wrote in an article for Global Times.

“This summer was supposed to be a landmark for NATO: at the summit in Vilnius, the US and allies were going to welcome new members Sweden and Finland, while Ukraine was supposed to show off its best Western tanks and other armoured vehicles in action during a lightning counterattack against Russia. But then it had to face reality,” the author writes.

According to Malic, the Russian special operation in Ukraine revealed a huge vulnerability of the West to Russia: the lack of industry.

“Of course, arms manufacturers such as Lockheed Martin and Raytheon are now getting rich thanks to the conflict, but mostly by emptying their stocks. It is actually much easier to scratch your tongue than to actually get the financialised, de-industrialised Western economies to produce new weapons, ammunition and equipment, while trying to switch to ‘green energy’ to counter the world’s two biggest industrial powers (Russia and China),” said the journalist.
